The Benefits of a Greenhouse
A greenhouse is a structure made of transparent material, usually glass. This is a great way to control the environment of your plants.
Some greenhouses are so hi-tech, the environment is controlled by computers.
But
You don’t need to spend so much. You can still grow plants in a greenhouse without being finicky.
First, let’s talk about the importance of having a greenhouse.
1. All-year growing
Even if you live in a place with four seasons, you don’t have a problem with growing plants. The plants will have longer growing seasons because of the greenhouse.
The greenhouse allows you to control the climate that would be suitable for growing plants.
Basically
When it’s summer and the weather is too hot, then you can make the greenhouse colder.
During the winter, you can have a heater inside the greenhouse.
You know what that means?
You can harvest all year long!
2. Protection from harsh elements
So we talked about protecting the plants from the weather, but the thing is, there are times when we can’t predict the weather.
Look:
We basically know when winter, spring, summer and autumn come. But there are extreme weather conditions that we can’t expect.
I’m talking about extremely hot weather conditions, frost and strong winds.
There are also times when it becomes surprisingly cold in May or really hot in November.
Let me elaborate
If you are growing plants that prefer the cold, it will not be affected with a surprisingly hot day when it is ensconced in the greenhouse.
In the same manner, plants that prefer warm conditions will not be affected when it suddenly snows as they will be protected by the greenhouse.
More importantly
The greenhouse will protect your plants from animals.
Animals won’t be able to damage your plants and eat their fruits.
There is also less chance of pests attacking your plants.
3. More plant options
You can plant so many things, including those that aren’t really native in your area.
Native plants are largely dependent on a region’s soil and weather. You can personalize both when you have a greenhouse.
You just need:
Real understanding of what the plant needs.
When you do, you can then try to control the environment within the greenhouse.
That then leads us to the next benefit:
4. Customization
This has been briefly discussed and it doesn’t need any more elaboration.
It’s very simple: you provide the plant the environment it needs when placed in the greenhouse: that will include soil, the right type of pot and the right temperature.
Also
You can choose the size of the greenhouse.
Not all greenhouses are as large as cottages. You can find one that is appropriate for your needs: the number of plants you have, the size of the yard where it will be placed, and your budget.
About Greenhouse Heaters
Now this brings us to greenhouse heaters, one important tool that will help you control the temperature inside the garden structure.
First
Let’s explain the role of the greenhouse. It is a structure that traps heat to keep to help the plants grow.
This is why the greenhouse is made up of see-through material because it aims to allow the sun to prove heat to the greenhouse.
But
What happens when the sun is barely there?
That’s where the greenhouse heater comes in.
In other words
When it’s winter and the days become shorter, a greenhouse heater becomes an essential tool for your greenhouse.
If you want to grow plants, you might as well invest on something that will truly allow you to reap the benefits.
Don’t worry
Buying a greenhouse heater will not break the bank.
So how do you choose the best small greenhouse heaters?
How to Pick the Right Greenhouse Heater?
This article is more about backyard gardening. So we will be talking about personal or small greenhouses rather than the commercial ones.
For that, we would need a small greenhouse heater.
Size
This will be the first consideration when you try to pick a greenhouse heater.
How big is your greenhouse?
As mentioned
We are mostly talking about a greenhouse for hobbyists here, so we mostly just need a small heater.
But size is definitely the first thing we have to think about. You have to keep in mind that the bigger the heater, the more power it packs.
BTU / Watts
BTU means British thermal units, and it refers to the amount of heat the equipment produces.
It is important to choose the right BTU for your greenhouse.
Otherwise
You might underheat or overheat the greenhouse.
However, not all heaters use BTU in their specs.
Similarly
The higher the wattage of your equipment, the more powerful it is.
It also means higher electrical use.
Power source
You can have three choices: electric, natural gas and propane.
Electric
This is ideal for hobbyists or those who do backyard gardening but in a greenhouse. In other words, it’s good for small greenhouses.
You can have the powerline in your house and just have an extension wire to reach the greenhouse. It is really effective in controlling temperature.
You won’t have to worry about harmful fumes, too. Plus, electric equipment also entails less greenhouse gas emission.
Natural gas
This is only applicable if there is a gas line that runs straight to the greenhouse.
Propane
This is probably the most popular power source for heaters. It is very convenient to use and cost-efficient, too.
It is worth mentioning, though, that you need good ventilation to have a propane-fueled greenhouse heater.
Below is my list of the best small greenhouse heaters of 2023.

The Best Small Greenhouse Heaters 2023

BEST FOR…
Precision heating
Product Spec
- Power Source – Electric
- Power – 1,500 watts
- Voltage – 120 volts (60 Hz)
- Dimension – 6.4 inches by 5inches by 10 inches
- Weight – 2.87 lbs

This is a personal space heater that can be used in offices and at home.
It uses ceramic heating, which is supposed to be more efficient in providing heat than regular fan heaters.
Incidentally
Ceramic heating is said to be safer.
More than that, the ProBreeze heater has a built-in anti-tip-over switch as well as overheat protection.
Is this important?
Of course it is!
You might be leaving this product behind to heat your space and forget about it.
Which brings us to this:
If you are going to use this heater in the greenhouse, then it better not overheat. You don’t want to kill the plants just because you have a terrible heater.
And this product is far from being terrible.
Moving on
The product also has adjustable control for its thermostat. This way, you can adjust the heat based on how cold the surrounding is.
Isn’t that convenient?
Another convenient advantage is precision heating.
The heater will only heat the part that you want. It won’t affect the other areas except for minimal collateral heat.
Meaning
If you are growing different kinds of plants, you can focus the ProBreeze heater to the group of plants that need heat more.
The other plants that prefer colder climates won’t be affected especially if they are far from the direction of the heat.
You know what else?
It’s very handy. It’s quite easy to transfer from one place to another.
It’s also quite affordable.
However
You can hear a bit of noise in the equipment especially when you put it on high. It’s a good thing that this would be for the greenhouse so you won’t get bothered by the sound.
MY RATING: 96%
Pros
- Safe ceramic heating
- Overheat protection
- Adjustable thermostat
- Precision heating
Cons
- A bit noisy

You know what it is perfect for?
A greenhouse that has an area of 120 square feet. That’s larger than most backyard greenhouses.
It can circulate at 163 cubic meters per hour.
Aside from being efficient
It’s a durable heater, too
The body is made of stainless steel with a painted steel grills in front.
Now let’s talk about its important in plants
The heater has high air circulation fans that could prevent mold formation in plants.
It is also splash-proof as indicated in its IPX4.
How is this important?
It is quite necessary for small greenhouses, which are often smaller.
Listen:
While some space heaters are usually used in houses and offices, they could also be used in greenhouses.
The Bio Green Heater is made for the greenhouse but can also be used in garages, sheds and workshops.
Versatile, right?
This heater also heats up pretty quickly.
Here:
This is a really great greenhouse heater and the only reason why it is not number one is because of the price.
It’s quite expensive especially if you have just spent some money building your greenhouse.
However
If you have the budget for it, you should really buy it! It’s a great investment!
MY RATING: 94%
Pros
- Efficient

- Prevents molds in plants
- Good in humid areas
Cons

#3 Vornado AHV10 Vortex Heater
BEST FOR…
Centralized heating
Product Spec
- Power Source – Electric
- Power – 750 /1,500 watts
- Voltage – 120 volts
- Dimension – 9.25 inches by 11.63 inches by 12 inches
- Weight – 5.40 lbs
- Warranty – 5 years
- PRICE GUIDE – $$
Let me start with this: 5 years warranty.
That doesn’t sound real, does it? But it’s true!
What does that say about the product?
It basically means that Vornado is confident about its mechanism.
That’s not the best part of the product, I just wanted to start with its most unique benefit. Unique because most equipment just gives one or two years of warranty.
Let’s move on:
It heats the entire space from small to medium-sized rooms.
This is done through vortex air circulation.
Check this out:
The AVH10 is actually part of what Vornado’s call the whole room heaters. As the name suggests, it is pretty effective in providing centralized heating.
But you want to know something amazing?
This heater has an auto climate control. It will adjust its heat depending on how the environmental temperature is.
This way, you don’t have to make adjustments all the time.
For instance:
When you put this in your greenhouse garden, chances are there will be temperature changes while you are not around.
At least you don’t have to worry so much about your plants.
Adjustments
You can choose from three different settings: fan, low and high. The low setting is on 750 watts while the high one doubles that.
The product also has a number of safety systems.
Protections
So the Vornado Vortex heater has a cool-touch exterior. This means that even if the heater is on high, you won’t feel it when you touch the heater.
It also has a tip-over protection and an automatic shut-off system.
Other components
The heater comes with a handle for portability.
It also comes with a six-foot cord that you can store in a hidden cord storage in the bottom of the heater.
Mighty convenient, right?
It’s quite posh, too. The dial is on a LED screen.
Also
If you shut it off, the heater cools down really quickly.
Now the bad part
When you first use this, there is an odor to it that I can’t quite explain. But it’s not a good one.
So if you do buy this, I suggest that you turn it on while it is still outside. You don’t want that stench in your greenhouse.
MY RATING: 93%
Pros
- Gives centralize heating
- Auto climate control
- Safe
- 5 years warranty
Cons
- Emits a strong smell during first usage
#4 Hydrofarm MT10006 Seedling Heat Mat
BEST FOR…
Beginners
Product Spec
- Power Source – Electric
- Power – 17 watts
- Voltage – 120 volts
- Dimension – 9 inches by 9.5 inches
- Weight – 1.10 lbs
- PRICE GUIDE – $
For anyone just starting with gardening, this is the perfect heater. It is aptly called Jump Start Seedling Heat Mat.
It’s called a mat because you are supposed to put it under the container with seedlings.
What does it do?
It provides uniform heating to the seedlings, allowing them to withstand whatever conditions the greenhouse is under.
The product comes with wires that provide strong heating.
You should know
The Hydrofarm Seedling Heat Mat is durable and works really well.
Since it works closely with or for the seedlings, the mat increases the success of the seedlings growing.
How does it work?
Since it works as a mat, it warms the root area at 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
This is the perfect temperature for successful germination.
You know what else?
The product is waterproof, which means that it will not be damaged if it gets wet when you water the plants.
It also comes with a power cord that stretches six feet.
In addition
The mat is UL-listed. UL refers to Underwriters Laboratories, which is a group that tests and approves various products for consumer safety.
The organization has been doing this since 1894.
Amazing, right?
You know that the product is safe when it has the UL logo.
I can’t think much of a con here. But if I have to say something, one of its advantages is also a disadvantage.
Let me explain
This is like a heater for every set of plants. It is basically providing uniform growth.
However, it doesn’t provide a more centralized heating, which means, you have to buy more of this to accommodate a greenhouse with many plants.
In conclusion:
The advantages greatly outweigh the disadvantages of the Hydrofarm Jump Start Seedling Heat. It’s also quite affordable so it doesn’t matter if you have to buy a few of them.
Besides, you only buy a lot if you have a huge greenhouse. The mat can heat a tray of more than a dozen or two seedlings.
These seedlings will already populate much of the greenhouse, especially for small ones.
MY RATING: 91%
Pros
- Performs well
- Durable
- UL-listed
- Improves germination
- Waterproof
Cons
- Doesn’t provide centralized heating
#5 Dr. Infrared Heater DR-988A Garage Shop

- Voltage – 240 volts
- Dimension – 11.5 inches by 11.5 inches by 15.875 inches
- Weight – 20 lbs
- Warranty – 1 year
- PRICE GUIDE – $$
This is an industrial heater that is usually used in garages.
But it can be a great small greenhouse heater, too.
Look:
The product comes with an adjustable thermostat. This is important because it is always good when you can choose how hot you want your heater to be.
You have to consider that the climate is different each day.
Then there is this:
The heater comes with a fan that allows continuous production of heat in the entire space.
This product is sturdy, too.
The best part?
Dr. Infrared Heater’s product also has a high temperature limit.
This will prevent it from overheating.
In other words
This is a really safe heater.
You can definitely leave it with your plants.
Not just that
The product is quite portable, but it has safety grills that will prevent your fingers from being burned when you transfer it.
You also know that it’s safe because it is listed under UL and cUL.
Meanwhile
I don’t really have a lot of negative things to say about this heater. It may be in the higher-price range, but it is for good reason.
Although, this is kind of noisy because of the fan.
Here’s the deal:
This product is quite pricey. That’s also because this is an industrial heater.
If you can afford it, then the product is really worth it. It is especially great for areas where winter gets really cold and frosty.
This would be a great protection for your plants.
MY RATING: 90%
Pros
- Safe
- Powerful
- Fan allows continuous warmth
- Adjustable temperature
- UL / CUL listed
Cons
- The fan is quite noisy
#6 OPOLAR 1500W Ceramic Space Heater
BEST FOR…
Easy usage
Product Spec
- Power Source – Electric
- Power – 1,500 watts
- Voltage – 120 volts
- Dimension – 7.1 inches by 5.9 inches by 11.1 inches
- Weight – 3.5 lbs
- Warranty – 1 year
- PRICE GUIDE – $
Let’s get straight to point: Heating is very quick with the Opolar heater.
That’s actually what happens with ceramic space heaters.
The best thing is:
It’s really safe.
Then there are three modes in the heater that you can choose from.
What are these?
There is the fan only; low heat that runs on 1,000 watts and the high heat at 1,500 watts.
This way, you can run the heat based on the appropriate temperature. That’s important because you can’t always predict weather.
Let me elaborate
If it’s not too cold out, you can just set it to fan. It’s enough to bring heat to the plant.
But if the temperature is around zero, then the heater needs to be set on high.
Check this out:
This heater is more popularly used in mid-sized rooms. So you know it will be great for your greenhouse.
Even if your greenhouse is small, it’s still okay since you can always adjust the heat.
Furthermore
We’ve already mentioned that this heater is safe. Well, to prove that, the Opolar ceramic heater is ETL-listed.
This means that the product was made according to the national standards set.
Plus
The product comes with a handle so that you can easily move it wherever you want it.
There is also a tip-over protection on this heater.
What does that do?
Well, since this is a product developed for rooms, it was expected that it could be tipped over by children or pets. You don’t expect those in the greenhouse.
At least, you won’t inadvertently tip it over when you are tending the garden.
Most importantly
This is a user-friendly product. I swear, you don’t even need to read the instructions.
Although, I would suggest you do for proper usage.
The downside?
There are a few guidelines that you need to follow when using this heater:
- Don’t use where humidity is high.
- Don’t put in the corner–for a more even heating.
- It should be placed at least three feet from the walls.
- It should be on a flat surface.
They’re not too bad though, right?
Those shouldn’t stop you from buying this heater.
MY RATING: 90%
Pros
- Easy to heat
- Safe
- Adjustable
- Tip-over protection
- User-friendly
Cons
- There are strict guidelines into using this heater
- Needs flat surface
#7 Dr. Infrared Commercial Heater
BEST FOR…
Commercial use
Product Spec
- Power Source – Electric
- Power – 3000 / 6000 watts
- Voltage – 240 volts
- Dimension – 14.5 inches by 14.5 inches by 13 inches
- Weight – 27 lbs
- Warranty – 1 year
- PRICE GUIDE – $$$
As the name suggests, this greenhouse is really great for large structures. It is also quite expensive because it is for commercial use.
Now hear me out
Why should I include an industrial heater here?
First of all, we are talking about small heaters for greenhouses. This is actually quite a portable heater.
You read that right!
Notice the handle on the heater? That will allow you to position the heater any way you want.
That would be advantageous to plants in the greenhouse. This way, you can move the heater around on different days.
Now
What is quite telling about commercial-grade products is the power.
The Dr. Infrared Heater runs on 3,000 and 6,000 watts. It is a heavy-duty product with 240 volts.
And it can heat the space right away!
Let’s talk about the material:
The product provides uniform heat due to its spiral steel metal sheath.
It also has an eight-inch fan for maximum air flow.
Plus
The heater comes with an adjustable louver that you can set in five different ways. This way, you can choose the airflow that is just right for your space.
There is also a built-in adjustable thermostat.
It’s also a completely safe product.
Another thing
The heater is listed under UL and CUL. The former refers to Underwriters Laboratories, which tests and approves products as safe.
CUL listed is similar, but it’s a listing in Canada rather than the US.
To conclude:
This is a really powerful product! It works so well.
However, if you have a small greenhouse garden, then this may not be practically for you.
On the other hand, if you are already getting serious with your greenhouse garden and are planning to produce large quantities of plants, then this is definitely great for you!
MY RATING: 88%
Pros
- Powerful
- Portable
- UL / CUL listed
Cons
- Too expensive for hobbyist’s use
- Your electricity bill may be high
#8 Lasko 100 MyHeat Personal Ceramic Heater
BEST FOR…
Its affordability
Product Spec
- Power Source – Electric
- BTU – 682
- Power – 200 watts
- Voltage – 120 volts
- Dimension – 4 inches by 4inches by 6 inches
- Weight – 1 lb
- Warranty – 3 years (limited)
- PRICE GUIDE – $
Technically, this is a personal heater.
Thiis is a popular personal heater at work.
Let me elaborate
Those who work in a cold office–as most offices do–can bring this and put it under their desk. It will keep one’s legs warm.
Don’t worry, it has a low wattage.
Plus
It’s kind of small at just six inches in height with a dimension of four by four inches.
It won’t be a bother at all. It’s called MyHeat because it’s really for personal use.
Now
This is also something you can use for your small greenhouse.
It’s not complicated at all. There is no assembly needed.
That’s right!
It’s ready to use when you buy it. Just take it out of the box and you are good to go!
It comes with a six-foot cord.
Small advantage
The benefit of having a really small heater is that you can easily transfer it from one place to another.
Say a set of plants would need warmth more, then you position the heater near those plants. If the others are feeling neglected, you get to transfer the heater there, too, at another time.
Here’s something that could cheer you up
This product is labeled Amazon’s Choice. This means that many people bought the product and they were satisfied with how it worked.
That should tell you something, right?
Also
The product comes with automatic overheat protection. This way, you don’t have to fear overheating in your greenhouse.
It’s very quiet too.
Finally
MyHeat is also ETL listed. This is a certification given by Intertek after testing products to determine if they have complained with national standards.
This means that it is safe to use.
On the downside
Since the product is more for personal use, it’s really more for smaller greenhouses. It’s more of a personal heater than a space heater.
That’s why you really have to consider the size of your greenhouse if you want to buy this product.
Just remember:
This product is very cheap. You could probably buy more than one if you want higher temperature for the whole greenhouse.
MY RATING: 88%
Pros
- Small and convenient to move around
- Amazon’s Choice
- ETL listed
- No assembly needed
- Affordable
Cons
- More of a personal heater than space heater

Thank you Melissa, we really appreciate your kind comments! All the best,
Steve
We have a small – 4.5 x 4.5 x 7′ plastic greenhouse. We put our succulents and tender plants in it for the winter. We are in Houston, TX. While the winters here are relatively mild, we do sometimes get a night or two of freezing weather. As of now, we have an incandescent bulb in it. Most of these heaters seem like they would be overkill for such a small greenhouse, especially as it will not be used that much. The personal heater seems like it might work, though. I am concerned about the heat generated. I was wanting one that allows me to keep the temp around 50 to 55F. Do you think that one would work?
Hi Nancy, yes you are right most of the heaters in this list probably would be a bit too much for your greenhouse. The personal heater definitely is worth looking at, and probably would be the best fit for your greehnouse. I will also be updating this list for 2021 shortly, so keep an eye on it for that update as well. Hope this helps, Steve
